Berry Astonished by: Eric Yahnker

The older deadhead guy Mike who walks around with the peace sign and dreadlocks (he calls the locks his 'buddies') came in tonight for his usual six shots of espresso to go. He told me about how he goes to mass on Saturdays so his mom will let him go buck wild the next day. He also told me he attends the Spanish service and I said I found that interesting. He gave me his phone number in case I had any questions about "habla español" and said, "Buenas noches," with his paper espresso cup raised. He actually didn't leave the café until I replied in Spanish.

I got Saturday off next week so I'm officially done working at Linnaea's by Friday morning. I'm looking forward to being done with finals Monday because they consist of my two hardest classes: Biology and Sociology. Not too hard at all actually, but in comparison with Life Drawing and Spanish, they require much more effort.

I'm looking around and seeing if I can get rid of or eventually sell anything I have that I don't need - a broken iPod maybe? I bought a watch I didn't need, well, at least I don't like it so much now that it's arrived. Otherwise I've been pretty good about trying to prepare for the move next Saturday, six days from now.

I also did an encaustic drawing in my last class which I love - it's of a girl with her arms around a life size bat person and a grizzly bear. I think I may have to buy some wax so I can do this at home - although I'll have to make sure to only hang this sort of art in the bathroom or a windowless room. My studio apartment on the other hand has a lot of natural light and big windows in the living room. The guy we're subletting from is somewhat of a botanist and beetle enthusiast and has hung medical drawings and framed insects all over the house beside his exotic plants. He also works on bikes, so I have access to parts, and a tiny espresso machine I plan on using everyday.

It seems I'll be starting at Tully's café with at least 25 hours, and as long as I can afford rent, that sounds good to me. I'm a little disappointed to hear they don't tamp their espresso by hand, but am excited to be working in a place that's otherwise highly regarded for a little Bay Area chain. I'm thinking with these hours I'll have time to relax at home and do homework when I need to. We'll see if I need to pick up another job to make ends meet.
